Join us to meet other parents of children with Usher Syndrome in a safe and welcoming space. \n\n\n\nAs the mother of two young adult sons with Usher syndrome\, Pamela has firsthand experience navigating the challenges and triumphs of raising children with unique needs. She has spent over two decades navigating the complexities of early intervention\, educational accommodations\, and parent-professional partnerships. She works with local\, national\, and international organizations to support parents\, youth\, and young adults. Alongside her husband\, Pam guided her family’s transition from early parent-led advocacy to empowering her sons to become independent self-advocates\, disability community leaders and mentors to others. \n\n\n\nA published author and active community leader\, Pam serves on the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) National Technical Institute for the Deaf (NTID) Foundation Board\, as well as national advisory committees for the Hands & Voices Family Leadership in Language & Learning (FL3) Center and the American Academy of Pediatrics EHDI Provider Education Center. DESCRIPTION:Download Image\n    \n\n\n\n\n\nParent Support – Virtual Event\n\n\n\nRegister for Eyes Open\, Ears\n\n\n\nSupporting Technology Use in Young Children Who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing\n\n\n\nVirtual Event: \n\n\n\nThis parent/caregiver presentation will discuss the benefits of wear time for technology\, ideas for keeping devices securely on\, and how to maximize auditory access and incidental learning to promote access to listening and spoken language in day to day routines. Participants will learn the research behind thinking about hearing and listening as the “doorway to the brain”. In addition\, this presentation will explore resistance to hearing devices\, troubleshooting technology\, audiology support\, and considerations for children who may have concurrent conditions or diagnoses in addition to hearing loss. Participants will be able to see real-world examples and join in interactive discussions\, leaving them feeling empowered and knowledgeable to support their child in using their device to support overall language access and growth. \n\n\n\nMegan Myers is a Teacher of the Deaf and Listening and Spoken Language (LSL) Specialist and Kristin Bergholtz is a Speech-Language Pathologist. Both presenters have over 20 years of experience working with young children who are deaf/hard of hearing and their families to create their individualized journeys. Participants will learn the evidence behind bimodal-bilingual approaches\, discover practical strategies for embedding ASL and spoken language in daily routines\, and explore fun ways to create language-rich environments for DHH children. Through interactive discussion and real-world examples\, we will examine why ASL and spoken language together provide a strong foundation for language development and discuss strategies for creating language-rich environments at home.
