SUMMARY:Parent Support - Virtual Event - March 2026
DESCRIPTION:Download Image\n \n\n\n\n\n\nParent Support – Virtual Event\n\n\n\nReading with your Child using ASL\n\n\n\nVisual Strategies for Engaging Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children\n\n\n\nVirtual Event: \n\n\n\nWe invite parents to an hour of learning about visual strategies that will help you engage and read with your deaf and hard of hearing child. These strategies are based on research about how deaf adults get and maintain deaf children’s visual attention. See how other hearing parents have included these visual strategies\, and the impact on their child’s access to language. We will provide information about how and why visual strategies are important\, we will demonstrate the impact of the lessons\, and we will share valuable resources to help you on your journey. \n\n\n\nElaine Gale is the program leader of the Hunter College Deaf and Hard of Hearing teacher preparation program. She is also one of the Principle Investigators for Family ASL\, an NIH supported project investigating hearing parents learning to sign with their deaf children. \n\n\n\nShane Blau received his PhD in Linguistics from Gallaudet University (‘23) where he studied language acquisition in deaf infants. He is an adjunct instructor at Gallaudet and Ohlone College (CA) and a certified hearing interpreter. His research work now focuses on how hearing parents engage with their deaf and hard of hearing children as part of the Family ASL Project. \n\n\n\nGreat for families who are just starting to learn ASL with their deaf or hard of hearing child. Interpreted event. All are welcome. \n\n\n\nRegistration is required: Register link the virtual event \n\n\n\nor use the QR code: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhen: Wednesday\, March 11 Time: 7:00 pm – 8:00 pmLocation: OnlineHave Questions?Contact Hands & Voices of NY:Email: handsandvoicesny@gmail.com \n\n\n\n\nWhat works for your child is what makes the choice right! \n\n\n\nWe support families of Deaf or Hard of Hearing children\, unbiased towards communication methods. DESCRIPTION:Download Image\n \n\n\n\n\n\nParent Support – Virtual Event\n\n\n\nCreating Language-Rich Environments at Home\n\n\n\nIntentional and purposeful use of bilingual strategies for Deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) children\n\n\n\nVirtual Event: \n\n\n\nThis two-hour session explores how pairing American Sign Language (ASL) with spoken language fosters optimal language\, cognitive\, and social-emotional development. Participants will learn the evidence behind bimodal-bilingual approaches\, discover practical strategies for embedding ASL and spoken language in daily routines\, and explore fun ways to create language-rich environments for DHH children. Through interactive discussion and real-world examples\, we will examine why ASL and spoken language together provide a strong foundation for language development and discuss strategies for creating language-rich environments at home. Participants will leave with actionable strategies to foster a dual-language approach and create environments where DHH children can thrive. \n\n\n\nDr. Kimberly Ofori-Sanzo is the Director of Language First and a speech-language pathologist (SLP) who has experience working at a school for the deaf\, as well as presenting and publishing on topics related to language acquisition\, bilingualism\, and language deprivation. \n\n\n\nASL Interpreted Event \n\n\n\nRegistration is required: Register link the virtual event \n\n\n\nor use the QR code: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhen: Sunday\, April 26 Time: 4:00 pm – 6:00 pmLocation: OnlineHave Questions?Contact Hands & Voices of NY:Email: handsandvoicesny@gmail.com \n\n\n\n\nWhat works for your child is what makes the choice right! \n\n\n\nWe support families of Deaf or Hard of Hearing children\, unbiased towards communication methods.
