Hudson Valley ASL Ice Skating
(Saugerties, NY)
2025

On the afternoon of Sunday, February 23rd, six families gathered for an Ice Skating event at Kiwanis Ice Arena in Saugerties, NY. After meeting in the Hands and Voices party room, parents and little ones donned their skates and joined skating instructor and ASL interpreter Kelsey Beers on the ice for a lesson. After some practice, and with the help of some buckets and sleds, most of the attendees were making their way around the rink!
After the free skating time, families came together in the party room for hot cocoa, snacks, and some open drawing and play time. Everyone also received an educational booklet created in collaboration between The HELLO Lab at UCONN and Hands and Voices of New York. The booklet had some key phrases with instructional illustrations for using ASL to describe our day at the ice rink.
The event was organized by Kit Fraser, Andréa Grieco, and Dan Stern.
Event sponsored by the New York State Early Hearing Detection and Intervention Program (NY EDHI).
