Reading with your Child using ASL
Visual Strategies for Engaging Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children
Virtual Event:
We invite parents to an hour of learning about visual strategies that will help you engage and read with your deaf and hard of hearing child. These strategies are based on research about how deaf adults get and maintain deaf children’s visual attention. See how other hearing parents have included these visual strategies, and the impact on their child’s access to language. We will provide information about how and why visual strategies are important, we will demonstrate the impact of the lessons, and we will share valuable resources to help you on your journey.
Elaine Gale is the program leader of the Hunter College Deaf and Hard of Hearing teacher preparation program. She is also one of the Principle Investigators for Family ASL, an NIH supported project investigating hearing parents learning to sign with their deaf children.
Shane Blau received his PhD in Linguistics from Gallaudet University (‘23) where he studied language acquisition in deaf infants. He is an adjunct instructor at Gallaudet and Ohlone College (CA) and a certified hearing interpreter. His research work now focuses on how hearing parents engage with their deaf and hard of hearing children as part of the Family ASL Project.
Great for families who are just starting to learn ASL with their deaf or hard of hearing child. Interpreted event. All are welcome.
